The Thriller Plays Up The Anxiety Of Aitana’s Situation
Writer - managing director Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera build up tension through this complex kinsperson relationship . thing get particularly heated as Aitana learns her parents have have in Nadia ( Anna Kurikka ) , a refugee - turned - caretaker for Aitana ’s chum ( Jorge Motos ) , and are treating her like more of a daughter than their own . Aitana is witness to this and is slowly driven over the edge as she seeks answers from her cagey parent . You Are Not Meis not your typicalholiday film . It ’s not finger - adept or sappy , but the thriller reveals the deepness of insecurity and issues that are bubbling just beneath the surface .
There ’s something more sinister and , frankly , more interesting going on and it ’s impertinent of the filmmakers to veer away from our expectations .
Thethriller movieis deceivingly bright in the path it builds suspicion . At first , it ’s easy to be convinced the tension that exists between the profligate daughter and her family is due to her being queer . But we ultimately learn that ’s not the case at all . There ’s something more sinister and , frankly , more interesting going on and it ’s fresh of the filmmakers to veer off from our expectation . It dials up the vividness of the situation , which spread out at a good pace as it begins to do the very mysteries it poses at the beginning .
You Are Not Meunderstands that nonadaptive category dynamic are at the heart of every holiday film , but add a plethora of refreshing ingredient to keep thing from waning . Whether that ’s Dori and Oriol ’s bizarre relationship with Nadia or the deep dinner party company they ’re throw , Crespo and Romera observe a steady stream of intrigue that had me waiting for the big finale with curiosity .
You Are Not Me’s Themes Are Thought-Provoking
The celluloid ’s topic hit hard . The story brings together scheme characters and relationships but also allow us to reflect on the nature of genetic love , its conditions , and the expectations of what is owed because of that love . What the characters are uncoerced to sacrifice to help each other and who they ’re willing to advertise away to protect — by playing into emotional maltreatment and Aitana ’s insecurity — are important prospect of the narrative . Just how far the family is uncoerced to go to avoid severeness , even if it ’s at the disbursement of others , is deeply embedded in the narrative .
At the heart of the story is the very real emotional pain Aitana and her parents have caused each other . While the reveals change the setting , they do n’t convert the fact that the belief behind what they share with each other are genuine . Aitana ’s suspicion of Nadia and the jealousy she sense over her parents lavish her with affection highlights her own fear of losing her crime syndicate ’s love and being supervene upon . It also unveils her own biases and , by the end , we realise how she ’s like her parents .
Mike Capes and Johnny Wickham ’s The Invisible Raptor is a movie that , in spite of its ostensibly self - aware title , is dreadfully not queer enough .
You Are Not Meis a heightenedpsychological thrillerthat toys with our emotion just as it toys with Aitana ’s . It feed on our tendency to believe the worst before we ’re proven wrong . I loved that the core of the news report involved a superimposed parent - small fry moral force that gets more engaging as it goes . That a supernatural element was fox in there at the last may have driven the write up to its ultimate conclusion but I was glad to continue exploring the push and pull between Aitana and her fellowship just fine without it .
You Are Not Meis now playing in theaters and is available on digital . The plastic film is 98 min long and not rated .
