Bucky Barnes deplume his metal Vibranium weapon system from a dishwasher was one of the few shots focused on Sebastian Stan ’s Marvel character in the firstThunderbolts*trailer , and if you ’re like me , you may have had motley feelings about the scene . As a fan of Bucky , I was happy for any slight tidbit about the role , especially give it ’s been three years sincethe stop ofThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier , when he was last render in theMCU . I also treasure the insight into Bucky ’s solar day - to - day living as a superhero character .
However , in the circumstance of bothThunderbolts*movie trailers , the view of Bucky aim his metal arm out of the dishwasher seems to be play for laughs , which lead me with a saturnine taste perception in my mouth . Marvel has get down expert about depicting the disability of its heroes in recent age , most notably by finally conform Clint Barton ’s hearing loss in theHawkeyeseries . But the MCU seems to have a blind berth for Bucky , despite the character being a disabled veteran . Often , Bucky ’s stories in the MCU are so one - dimensional , the character is n’t given the nuance he deserve .
The Thunderbolts* Director Addressed Bucky’s Vibranium Arm In The Dishwasher
Sebastian Stan Also Recently Addressed The Marvel Movie Scene
While the response to theThunderbolts*trailer tantrum seems to be much more light - hearted and less wary than my own reply , it has become a favorite moment for many , include myself , and everyone seems to be eager to learn more about it . To that final stage , Sebastian Stan discussed the moment at hisComic Con Liverpoolpanel earlier this month , when a fan ask him whether Shuri told Bucky he could clean house his arm in the dishwasher or if the character came up with that himself . Stan said :
I ’m pretty sure he kind of look at the dish washer one day and think , ' why not ? [ It ] make a lot of sensory faculty ' , y’know?I thought it was kind of funny when I first image that in the script , but it is a quick way of doing it — at the end of the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. , just throw it in there with a couple of leftover knockout . I think it was [ Bucky ’s ] idea .
Even Stan admit the minute is funny , and he suggest at the mindset of Bucky in the unconscious process , paint a pictorial matter of someone wanting to cleanse their prosthetic quickly and expeditiously . Similarly , whenSchreier speak theThunderbolts*scene with Bucky ’s armin a recent issue of Empire Magazine , the music director teased the idea of there being more to Bucky ’s story than meets the middle . The theater director only said,“Come for the dishwasher jokes , stay for the inscrutable emotional journeying . "

The Thunderbolts* Director’s Comments Hint At A Nuanced Story For Bucky
The MCU Movie May Give Bucky A Deep Emotional Journey
What I find so bright about Schreier ’s comment — even considering how inadequate it is — is that he ’s clearly saying there ’s more toThunderbolts*than just dishwasher put-on . He is explicitlypromising that there will be more emotional depth to Bucky ’s character , and he wo n’t simply be a one - preeminence side character . This is highly heartening because the MCU has , in the past times , struggled to show the true interior workings of Bucky ’s character .
Even though he was one of the two main characters ofThe Falcon and the Winter Soldier , Captain America : The Winter Soldierwas a much better characterization of Bucky ’s emotional journeying , in large part thanks to Stan ’s playing . Stan was able-bodied to show audiences Bucky ’s pain and turmoil as his memories of Steve Rogers warred against his Winter Soldier scheduling . Conversely , The Falcon and the Winter Soldiershowed Bucky struggling , but the serial did n’t excavate very deep into his journeying of healing from being the Winter Soldier . Now , Thunderbolts*is the time to show Bucky ’s recondite worked up journey , as Schreier order .
Why It’s Important For Thunderbolts* To Get Bucky’s Story Right
Bucky Barnes Has Been Part Of The MCU For Over 13 Years
Bucky Barnes is a fascinating character . Throughout the many old age since he joined the MCU , Bucky has fought alongside Captain America , lost his weapon system , been brainwashed into a Hydra assassin , reunited with his best champion , and been stranded in forward-looking day . He ’s a disabled veteran who ’s press Nazis and alien armies — there is so much to research with Bucky ’s character that it ’s been frustrating to watch Marvel flounder in recent years . While I understand whyThe Falcon and the Winter Soldierfocused more on Sam Wilson , I ’m excited to see Bucky get a richer , more excited tale of his own .
I ’m absolutely going to see Thunderbolts * for the dishwashing machine jokes and the worked up journeying — specifically Bucky ’s aroused journeying .
There ’s also the unavoidable fact that Stan ’s meter in the MCU may be come on its end ( or , at least , it ’s closer to its end than it was five years ago ) . If Bucky survives the events ofThunderbolts*—which I ’m hoping he does — he might return forAvengers : Doomsdayand / orAvengers : Secret Wars , but those motion picture could reason out his story . If they do , it ’s difficult to believe it ’ll be as emotionally satisfying an end as Steve Rogers ' inAvengers : Endgame , despite the fact that both Stan and Bucky deserve as much .
Although Bucky Barnes is an interesting lineament , he ’s not one of the major players in the MCU , so I ’ll take my scraps of character exploitation and aroused journey where I can get them . Thankfully , it seems my concern thatThunderboltswould relegate Bucky to a side type that ’s the butt of abelist jest was wild . I ’m absolutely go to seeThunderboltsfor the dish washer jest and the aroused journeying — specifically Bucky ’s aroused journeying — and the film director ’s gossip make me more promising the movie does his story justice .
