Dungeons & Dragonsis update its long - neglect thirteenth form - the Artificer . Earlier this year , Wizards of the Coast free a newPlayer ’s HandbookforDungeons & Dragons , providing updated rules for character construction and more . While not destine to be a Modern variant ofD&D , the newPlayer ’s Handbookcontained extensive alteration , with all ofD&D ’s 12 core fiber classes receive some kind of update to make them more various and provide them with extra resources .

The only family that was n’t included in the newPlayer ’s Handbookis the Artificer , a grade first bring out to 5E inWayfinder ’s Guide to Eberronand afterwards revised inTasha ’s Cauldron of Everything . However , D&D ’s clothes designer assured fans thatthe Artificer would be update in a succeeding release . onward of that release , Wizards partake in a newUnearthed Arcana playtestincluding a rules revision for the class .

Most of the change are minor , with revisions to spell list and update abilities to bring the class in line with other 2024 classes . All four Artificer subclasses also receive update to crab up the Artificer ’s power .

How The Artificer Is Being Updated With D&D 2024 Rules

The D&D Class Has Received Updates To Make Its Ability More Widely Useful

Unlike the Ranger or the Monk , the Artificer did not receive a major rework to most of its core stratum features . The most illustrious changes are to the class ’s Magical Tinkering and Infuse Item ability . Magical Tinkering now admit players to craft broken - cost items cursorily , while Infuse Item was shift to Replicate Magic Item and permit players to create certain kindsof Magic Items . Players can convert Replicated magic items into a spell slot if necessary at higher levels . The stretcher Soul of Artifice power also receive a cost increase , no longer requiring a chemical reaction to spark off its " bearded darnel death " ability .

dungeon & Dragons has the potential to make some massively overpower theatrical role either through clever use of feats or by multiclassing .

As forthe Artificer subclass , the Alchemist can now produce more Experimental Elixirs , and the eminent - stratum Chemical Mastery ability experience a buff with extra damage and an innate resistance to wrong . The Armorer received a new Dreadnought selection as wellas a new Armor Replication ability that supercede the existing Armor Modification ability . Perhaps the heavy change comes to the Artillerist ’s Eldritch Cannon , with the player now able to switch between various combat options every turn rather of choosing an option prior to creating it .

Our Take: The Artificer Still Tries To Do Too Much

Several Artificer Subclasses Need More Than Three Abilities To Stand Out

Ultimately , the core job with the Artificer remain the same — it ’s a class that tries to incorporate multiple archetypes and fails to do any of them inspection and repair . While all the changes made to the Artificer are improvements , the class still lacks a truly unifying conception .

Some of the subclass option ( like the Battle Smith and the Armorer ) work well with the worldwide premise of the Artificer , butboth the Artillerist and the Alchemist could apply more than just three subclass abilities to stand out . I’m most concerned to see where the Artificer fit out intoDungeons & Dragons ' future plans , as there ’s not a clear place for the division in its 2025 Word plan .
